I have been doing a little coaching with a friend lately and yesterday the subject of Jing came up.

She ended up downloading it while we were on the phone and was SUPER-stoked about it.

In case you don’t know what Jing is, it’s basically a tool you can use to take pictures or videos (with a 5 minute maximum) of whatever’s on your computer screen.

You simply take your image or video, hit “Send to Screencast”, and it will automatically upload your content and give you a URL you can use to share it.

You don’t have to mess with FTP… it automatically does all the uploading for you.

If you don’t yet have Jing, here are 3 ways you can use it:

1.  Respond to emails with it like I mentioned in this post.

If your assistant forwards you a couple emails he/she can’t answer, simply take a screen capture of your email inbox, go through each email one by one, and record all your responses. Have your assistant dictate your responses and “answer” several emails within the course of 5 minutes.

You can also answer people yourself with these. Sometimes if my business partner sends me a ton of emails, I’ll simply open up Jing, respond to them in rapid fire, and then send him the video. It’s SO much faster than typing!

It’s also how I make time to email my mom almost every day. ;) (She loves it!)

2. Make personalized videos to your customers. If you want to reach out to someone, or just answer a complex question… simply make your customer a quick personalized video.

I’ve had so many people thank me for this. They feel special for getting their own video, and like I said, it’s faster. Talk about a win-win!

3. Create training videos for people. I am forever using this tool to explain to my assistant how to do something.

I just quickly make a video showing her how to do something, send her the link, and presto.

I also do copywriting critiques with Jing. I’ll go through a sales letter, make a couple key points about the copy, and then send someone the URL. It’s SO fast and SO easy for a tech dunce like me.

Bonus: You can also use this to take screenshots. For example, just this morning, I wanted to show my designer something on the footer of a blog that I didn’t like.

I took a screenshot of the footer, made an arrow pointing to what I didn’t like (you can edit pictures in Jing), and then sent the URL to my designer. Boom – instant clear communication.

:)

  1. Those are good ideas, but remember that not everyone loves video. I for one dislike video so much I wrote a blog post about it. http://www.crazyeasyprofits.com/please-dont-do-that-video/

Of course, there are occasions and subject matter that are BEST done in video, but for the most part, I think they’re overdone. I pity the poor VA who’s required to listen to an endless stream of videos from the boss IF s/he’s someone like me who cringes at yet another video I’m supposed to watch.

  2. Jing is a very useful tool in video production. CamTasia is also great for tutorials, and Audacity is really useful for getting the best out of your audio. Thanks for the tips!

  3. Rachel – I had been using it as you suggested for numbers 2 and 3 above but I did not think of using it with email. Brilliant! I am a very visual organizer person so I love how the Jing "Sun" sits at the top of my screen, as a visual reminder of its usefulness!

  6. Hi Rachel, thanks for sharing the various ways you use Jing. I loved it when you sent me a video
email last December when you had a time to ask questions. I’ve been experimenting with it myself. I’ve run into some glitches I’m not sure how to work out but I love the fun little tool this is.
I’ve also discovered http://www.mailvu.com which is super easy to send video emails. I’ve sent them to my friends and family and it’s been fun. Quicker and more personal I think.
Anyway, I don’t always comment but I enjoy your other reflective blogs too.
    Keep up the good work!

  7. Hi Rachel,

Your blog is looking fantastic. One suggestion: In the main post, font is very small. Please make it looks a bit bigger. Make the font like the font in the widgets in the right sidebar. It looks bigger and better.

    Cheers,
    Narendra

    • Because I have an older Mac (OS X 10.4.11), I was having a tough time fiinndg a screencast tool that works on my computer. After watching a few tutorials and experimenting with the trial version (free for 15 days), seems to work well. I thought I should share this info in case other people are having trouble, too.

  11. Hi, Cant' read your blog because the Facebook, Twitter, etc. like area blocks about 40% of the screen. I am using Chrome. I wonder if that's the problem? I would love to read the info, because you always give us the good stuff!

  14. I used to love Jing, but they abandoned future development of it, and Pro accounts are no longer offered and soon to expire.

They are pushing everything to SnagIt now, which is my favorite product, but it wasn’t as optimized to sharing with as few clicks but managed to get it pretty close to as streamlined as Jing was. Although I use SnagIt 20+ times a day for other things, Jing really was the best for quick sharing.

  19. These are great ideas I haven’t thought of using Jing for especially the email response. Techsmith has some great products I love using Camtasia for software reviews / tutorials. One way I would think of using Jing for those who don’t have Camtasia or Snagit, would be a talking head resume. Or using it to capture screenshots of your latest WordPress design, Facebook Page, etc to add to your portfolio page to showcase them. Thanks Rachel – Eleanor

  20. Rachel,
    I love the new look!
I have known about Jing for awhile, but I don't ever use. I think your three tips will give me reasons to start using it. Have fun in NY! See you in August!
