Etsy regularly updates the categories and attributes that you can add to your listings. And it recently added a handful of new attributes to describe face masks.
Etsy’s categories help shoppers filter their searches so they can find exactly what they’re looking for. And based on your listings’ categories and subcategories, you get access to specific attributes, which you can use to further describe your listings.
Attributes work with your listings’ tags to help improve your Etsy search rank, so they are an important component of your Etsy SEO and getting more eyeballs on your listings.
Adding attributes is an extra step, though. And so, I wanted to test for myself just how effective they are at helping my listings get more views and sales.
Below, I talk about exactly what I did to test Etsy’s new face mask attributes and the results I got from my case study.
Let’s get started…
Here’s what I did…
I worked with one of my designers to create 10 brand new face mask designs that I could use for both neck gaiters and small face masks.
Next, I created 10 neck gaiter listings featuring each design as well as 10 small face mask listings with the same designs. For these listings, I didn’t bother adding any of Etsy’s new face mask attributes.
Then, I created 10 copies of the neck gaiter listings and 10 copies of the small face mask listings with the only difference being that in these 20 listings, I did add Etsy’s new face mask attributes.
Everything else was the same, though — the titles, images, descriptions, price. The addition of the attributes was the only change I made.
I also created all of the listings on the same day so they’ve all been up for sale the same length of time.
Here’s what Etsy’s new face mask attributes look like:
Under style, you have the following options:
- Bandanna
- Fitted
- Neck gaiter
- Pleated
- Multiple options – I offer more than one
For my listings, I chose the following attributes:
Neck gaiters
- Style – neck gaiter
- Size – adult
- Filter pocket – no
- Nose wire – no
Small mask
- Style – fitted
- Size – adult
- Filter pocket – no
- Nose wire – no
- Closure – elastic
I also selected primary and secondary colors, depending on the masks’ design, for each of my listings with attributes.
I waited about a week before checking in on how my listings were doing.
Check out the results so far…

As you can see, for the most part, the face mask listings with attributes got more views and more sales than the face mask listings with no attributes.
There were three times when the listings with no attributes got more views and one time when both listings had the same number of views and sales.
It makes sense that listings with attributes get more views and sales. Attributes are designed to help you improve your ranking and get more eyeballs on your products. So these results were in line with what I had expected.
Adding attributes to your face mask listings really only takes an extra second. And based on the results of this case study, which I may update later, it seems like taking that extra second is definitely worth it.
Only three of these listings had over ten views and only two of them made any sales. But all of these listings were face masks that included attributes. So I’m hopeful that as more time goes on, these listings will see even more conversions.
What do you think of this case study? Have you been adding face mask attributes to your listings? Leave a comment below and share your experiences. And if you enjoyed this post, please share it with your friends and followers.

Where I aPologize for the typo.
Hey there, If you choose the face masks and coverings category for your listings (as shown in a screenshot in the blog post), the attributes will show up below. :)
is there a training on designing and selling facemasks on gearbubble?
Hey Steve, There is the option to create face masks on GearBubble and you’d launch those the same way you would the other products. :)
