You don’t need to chase trends.
You don’t need to be clever.
You just need to show up where your buyers already are — typing in weirdly specific, emotional, long-tail phrases with their wallets in hand.
This is the exact Etsy keyword method I use (and teach in Low Hanging System) to uncover phrases that look random… but secretly sell like crazy.
Let me show you..
Real-World Example: The Croquet Stand Clip Art That Made $437
I uploaded a simple listing: no text, no trendy phrase.
Just a piece of croquet stand clip art.
It almost didn’t make it online…
But then it earned $437.
Why? Because people were already searching for “croquet stand clip art.”
That’s the power of buyer intent.
Step 1: Start with the Surface Niche
Ask yourself: Who is this for?
-
Dog mom
-
ICU nurse
-
Fisherman
-
Theater teacher
Keep it general at this stage.
Step 2: Add an Identity Twist
Now make it personal or descriptive:
-
Divorced dog dad
-
Retired ICU nurse
-
Goth scrapbooker
-
First-gen college grad
This is where keyword gold begins to form.
Step 3: Layer in the Emotion, Event, or Occasion
What’s happening in their life?
-
Graduation
-
Grief
-
Diagnosis
-
Promotion
-
Breakup
-
Wedding
Now string it all together:
-
“Grief gift for pagan dad”
-
“Funny retirement mug for paramedic”
-
“LGBTQ nurse graduation ornament”
You’ve now created emotional, low-competition long-tail keywords buyers are actively searching for.
Step 4: Use ChatGPT to Expand Ideas
Prompt example:
“Give me 15 long-tail Etsy search phrases for a [identity] looking for a [gift type] that reflects [emotion or situation].”
You could try:
“Give me 15 Etsy keyword ideas for a divorced dad who bowls and just moved into his own place.”
And then:
“Now make them funny or sarcastic.”
Outputs might include:
-
“Bowling dad housewarming gift”
-
“Funny divorced dad decor”
-
“Strike single life mug”
Step 5: Validate Your Keywords
Use a research tool (I share my fave in Low Hanging System) or just check:
-
Etsy autocomplete
-
Listings with reviews using your phrase
-
Low competition + consistent demand
This = keyword magic.
Final Step: Make the Listing
Use the keyword in:
-
Your title
-
The first line of your description
-
Tags (both exact match + loose match variations)
Boom. You’re no longer chasing trends.
You’re showing up exactly where real buyers are looking.
