With the Low Hanging System a big part of the design creation process involves throwing spaghetti at the wall. However, you can use certain techniques to create designs that may be more likely to resonate with potential customers.
One of these techniques is to follow what’s trending in ecommerce. And fortunately, Etsy makes this process easy.
Every year, Etsy puts out a Marketplace Insights report, which talks about the most popular trends happening on Etsy in terms of products and designs.
If you review this report, you can incorporate what’s trending on Etsy 2022 into your design ideas, thus optimizing your chances of creating something people want to buy.
Below, I go over some of the most relevant trends happening on Etsy this year as they relate to LHS. I also include examples of these trends in action for you to use as inspiration.
Let’s take a look…
Discover what’s trending on Etsy 2022
A big part of LHS involves throwing spaghetti at the walls, but there are things you can do to get a better feel for what type of designs are going to sell well. And paying attention to trends is one of them, as doing so offers you more targeted design inspiration.
Emerald green and pastels
Specific colors often go in and out of style. And according to Etsy’s 2022 Marketplace Insights, the colors that are in right now are emerald green and pastels. So with any new designs you create, you may want to incorporate these colors into your fonts and images. Or, you could include them with any mockups you create.
Etsy says there’s been a “67% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for emerald green items” and a “2,627% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for pastel room décor.”
Here are some examples of mugs that incorporate these colors:
Abstract, rounded shapes and designs
Etsy says playful shapes like arches, pyramids, squiggly lines, prisms, and scalloped edges have recently become popular. So if you can include them in your designs, you may be able to increase your items’ popularity.
Etsy says it’s seen a “177% YoY increase in searches…for squiggles.”

Throwback designs to the ’90s and Y2K
Millennials and Gen Z customers love ’90s and Y2K nostalgia. This includes the lingo, fashion, music, TV shows, movies, and anything else that was trendy. Be mindful of trademark and copyright issues when making these types of designs. As a safe bet, you can stick with designs that feature popular ’90s slang and phrases like…
- Talk to the hand
- Da bomb
- As if!
- Eat my shorts
- Gettin’ jiggy
- Let’s bounce
- My bad
- No duh
- Oh snap
- Take a chill pill
- All that and a bag of chips
Etsy reports a “50% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for Y2k.”
Here are some examples of mugs with designs inspired by the ’90s or Y2K:
Designs featuring mythical creatures are especially popular as either gifts for kids or party favors or supplies for kids’ parties. Mythical creatures include things like dragons, unicorns, and fairies. (To see a more all-encompassing list of mythical creatures, click here.)
Etsy says there’s been a “24% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for dragon toys.”

Now that we’re well into spring, people are done with the cold weather and want to be surrounded by things that remind them of sunny days and warm getaways. Incorporate things like palm trees, beach scenes, tropical animals, and tropical flora and fauna into your designs and make them bright and colorful.
Etsy says, “explore incorporating rainforest flora and fauna imagery in deep, energetic emerald green tones.”
Here are some examples of designs featuring tropical scenery:
Personalization is always popular on Etsy. So this is a trend that’s here to stay. You can offer a personalization option for just about any design you create. Let customers add things like names, dates, photos, and text to your products to make them extra special.
If you want, you can also combine two or more of these trends together. For example, you could create a 90’s inspired design using pastel-colored fonts and then include the option to personalize the item by letting customers add their names.
As an another example, you could create a design featuring a mythical creature, like a mermaid, using lots of the color emerald green. And if you really wanted to go to town combining trends, you could even have the mermaid riff on a popular 90’s phrase by saying something like, “Talk to the fin!”
